The Manatee County seat, on the river

Bradenton is the Manatee County seat, on the south bank of the Manatee River near its mouth at Tampa Bay^[1]. Barrier islands and the Intracoastal Waterway separate it from the Gulf^[1]. Palmetto sits across the river on the north bank.

Rain and the river

The National Weather Service defines the Southwest Florida rainy season as May 15 to October 15, with river flooding one of the hazards at the peak from July to early September^[8]. A wet, warm season is when growth builds up on shaded walls and walkways.

Where the water goes

The City of Bradenton says any discharge to the drainage system or a waterway that is not entirely stormwater is prohibited, and that pollutants may not enter the street, gutter or storm drain^[6]. Manatee County prohibits discharges to its municipal storm sewer system other than stormwater flows^[7]. Bradenton stormwater drains to the Manatee River, then Tampa Bay and the Gulf^[6].
