A large city with canals and a water-supply concern

North Port covers 104.21 square miles in Sarasota County^[1]. It has about 80 miles of freshwater canals^[2]. The city sits in the Big Slough Watershed, and stormwater routed to Myakkahatchee Creek and the Cocoplum waterway supplies North Port Utilities drinking water^[3]. That makes what enters the stormwater system especially important here.

Growing commercial property

The city is building a 95,000-square-foot, two-building City Center complex near Price and Sumter boulevards^[4]. Retail along Toledo Blade Boulevard includes Publix, Aldi and Wawa^[4]. Wellen Park is a master-planned community of over 7,000 acres with shopping and a downtown^[1]. North Port does not yet have a hospital. Sarasota Memorial’s North Port hospital is approved as a 100-bed, six-story building on the 4900 block of N Sumter Blvd, slated to open in fall 2028^[5]. Warm Mineral Springs, along US 41, is jointly owned by Sarasota County and North Port^[6]. New and growing plazas need regular exterior care, and shopping centers and plazas are what we specialize in.

Rain, humidity and shade

The National Weather Service defines the Southwest Florida rainy season as May 15 to October 15^[7]. Many North Port lots are landscaped and shaded, and a wet, warm season is when growth builds up on shaded walls and walkways.

What the city regulates

North Port has an Illicit Discharge Ordinance, No. 05-47, regulating non-stormwater discharges to the storm system^[3].
