Soffit, Fascia and Gutter Cleaning: Why the Underside of Your Roof Matters

Nobody looks up. But the soffit and fascia are where moisture and growth sit, and they are the first place trouble starts.

What the photos show

Why it matters

• Rot. Mildew and algae hold moisture against whatever they are growing on. On wood soffit and fascia, moisture that sits there for years is what leads to rot and peeling paint. On vinyl or aluminum it is mostly a looks problem, but it is the same growth.
• HOA notices. Many homeowners associations have exterior appearance rules and send letters about visible mildew. Stained soffits and fascia are easy for a neighbor or an inspector to see.
• Appearance. A stained roof edge makes the whole building look older and less cared for, and buyers and customers notice it from the street.
• Gutters that work. Streaked, dirty gutters are often the ones that are also holding debris.

What to check on your own building

• Stand at each corner and look up at the soffit. Dark streaks and spots mean growth.
• Look under the gutters and around the downspouts, where water runs.
• Press on the wood and look for peeling paint. If wood is soft, that is rot, and it needs a carpenter, not a wash.
